40 years ago, ChiangRai was an important center on the drugs road, particularly for the distribution of opium. Since then, great efforts have been made to replace opium production in Thailand with new crops, particularly in ChiangRai with tea production. The most planted cultivar in the region is Jinxuan, imported 30 years ago from Taiwan. This plant is part of the history of the region, and still today, convoy of drug mules drive along the hilly roads of Chiang Rai mountains trying to escape the police checkpoints on the way to southern markets.
